Interested in studying with me at the University of Edinburgh? Here’s what you need to know:

PhD Advising

If you’re interested in applying to study with me at the University of Edinburgh please start with the information on my faculty page here. I am accepting and prioritising PhD proposals that align with the aims and mission of the Digital Lab for Islamic Visual Culture & Collections.

Information on how to apply to the PhD program is available on University of Edinburgh’s page here.

For those who don’t already have a Master’s degree with a focus on medieval Islamic art/architectural history, I strongly recommend getting this in place first before applying to the PhD with me. I supervise students in the School of History of Art’s MSc in Global Premodern Art: History, Heritage, and Curation and MPhil/PhD/MSc by Research programmes. I also direct the MSc in History of Art, Theory and Display.

Language

Students should enter with a working knowledge of Arabic and/or other pertinent languages depending on specific research interests.  While the University of Edinburgh offers courses and other resources through Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies access is not always possible due to high demand.

Areas of Strength

Edinburgh has important collections of Islamic visual culture at the National Museum of Scotland and in the museums and special collections of the university itself.

Besides the resources available in the School of the History of Art, ECA has great strengths in History of Architecture/Architecture/Landscape Architecture, Design, Music, and Art.

Other important resources in Edinburgh: uCreate Studio; Creative Informatics; Edinburgh Futures Institute; the History & Games Lab and the Late Antique Islamic, and Byzantine Studies (LAIBS) programme in the School of History, Classics and Archaeology (HCA); the Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies (IMES) programme in the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures (LLC); and through the Alwaleed Centre.
